Avia's Story

The best gift I ever received was from the universe: a second chance at life. One that would be completely different from the one I was originally about to live. I survived the “One Child Policy” in China and now it is my time and mission to give back by amplifying adoptee narratives and level the playing field for all members of the adoption community to be heard. Through this, we can understand our challenges and adversity and ensure equal opportunities, erase discrimination, and understand what is truly means to be Made of Love Not Genes.

I was born in a country that prided itself on preventing 400 million births (more than the population of the U.S.) as an effort to mitigate the overpopulation. The “One Child Policy” was gruesome and imposed laws forcing families to sterilize or have abortions, including late-term abortions up to 9 months. This included abandoning newborns  in order to keep every household at only one child. However, some families chose to live in hiding to secretly keep their additional children, who then missed out on the gifts we take for granted everyday including education, access to medicine, and being counted as a citizen.

Due to the different political policies and social standards of China at the time, many adoption stories are uncertain, including mine. However, I was told that I was abandoned at a tax office due to the “One Child Policy” ultimately leading to my adoption from an orphanage in Chongqing. Although it is sometimes difficult to be uncertain of my biological family and my path to adoption.

My passion for adoption came from education. As I learned more about adoption, I debunked my own misconceptions that I had about the adoption process. Through my volunteer work at local, regional, and national levels, I have created connections and gained a supportive community that have helped me along every step. Even now as I write this, I am constantly learning new facts that change my perspectives which is why I always encourage education and awareness. Seeing the lack of awareness and the stigma that surrounds adoption on a national and global scale I decided to take initiative at a personal level to share my story and passion to solve these issues that exist in the world.

I owe so much of my motivation, skills and success to the Miss America Organization. My inspiring Aunt introduced me to this system at a young age, starting in their mentorship programs. Now, I compete in the Miss America Organization because I admire the emphasis on education and the focus on the talents of each individual. This organization not only provides thousands of dollars in scholarships, but it has provided me with numerous skills to grow as a person. In addition, the countless volunteers, directors, and contestants have all shaped me into the person I am today. For that, I am forever grateful for the relationships I have gained all over the country from this program. Most importantly, this organization's emphasis on social impact initiatives that are unique to the passions of each young woman are inspiring. I thank this organization for giving me the opportunity to create Made of Love Not Genes and develop it into my own.

My second chance at life instigated a purpose within me to share my story and shed light on adoption through education and identification and resolution of challenges the adoption community faces. I am passionate about celebrating our backgrounds and where we all come from because individuality makes us each so unique and beautiful. Every adoptee's story is different and I utilize the platforms I have to celebrate as many of these stories as I can to spread positivity in others' lives through education and awareness. I was given a chance at life, so I will continue to use every opportunity I have to serve others.

Now that you know a bit about my background and the fuel to my passion, I invite you to take a look around this site and I hope you learn some new facts! Thank you again for taking the time to visit my page! If you would like to connect or feature your story, I would love to hear from you!
